Fairfax House stands in York as a masterful example of Georgian architecture and opulent eighteenth-century life. Originally the winter residence of Viscount Fairfax and his daughter, Anne, the townhouse was exquisitely remodelled by the renowned northern architect John Carr between 1759 and 1762. Its interiors are celebrated for their magnificent rococo plasterwork by Giuseppe Cortese and James Henderson, which adorn the ceilings and grand staircase. After a period of decline, during which it was repurposed as a gentlemen's club, a cinema, and a dance hall, the house was saved and meticulously restored by the York Civic Trust in the 1980s. Today, it serves as a museum, showcasing the Noel Terry collection of fine Georgian furniture and clocks, and offering a captivating glimpse into the splendour of aristocratic city living in the Georgian era.
